ADMIRAL Joins Forces with Transport Research Centre Verne to Advance Logistics Emissions Reporting

In an era where sustainability is a top priority, the importance of accurate logistics emissions reporting has never been more critical. On January 23, 2025, ADMIRAL had the privilege of participating in a high-impact workshop on logistics emissions data and reporting, organized by Transport Research Centre Verne and Vediafi Oy. The event gathered industry leaders, policymakers, and researchers to address challenges and opportunities in emissions calculation and reporting.

Key Insights from the Workshop

The workshop was a continuation of the LOLIPOP project (Business and emission reduction potential for logistics through emissions reporting), which concluded in spring 2024. Discussions revolved around the state of logistics emissions calculation, necessary future measures, and sector-wide challenges. Several key takeaways emerged:

  • Sustainability reporting is growing in importance, with more businesses recognizing the need to track and reduce their carbon footprints.

  • Variability in emissions data availability and accuracy poses challenges, making standardization crucial.

  • Differences in reporting practices across logistics operators hinder comparability and efficiency.

  • Diverse capabilities across transport actors, particularly in terms of resources and expertise, affect the speed of implementation.

  • Customer demands and tendering power are key drivers for improved emissions reporting.

  • Cross-sector collaboration and best practice sharing are essential for industry-wide progress.

  • Comprehensive verification mechanisms are necessary to ensure data reliability and compliance with regulations.

ADMIRAL’s Contribution: Driving Sustainable Freight Solutions

Representing ADMIRAL at the event, Dr. Harri Pyykkö, Coordinator at VTT, shared valuable insights on freight transportation procurement, Scope 3 emissions calculation, electronic freight documentation, and the CountEmissionsEU initiative. These topics align closely with ADMIRAL’s mission to support data-driven sustainability efforts in logistics and supply chains.

Looking Ahead: A Joint Publication for Impactful Change

Beyond the workshop, ADMIRAL is thrilled to collaborate on an upcoming joint publication that will further analyze the workshop’s findings and propose actionable strategies for emissions reduction. This partnership underscores ADMIRAL’s commitment to fostering knowledge-sharing and industry transformation through research, innovation, and collaboration.
